Flagstaff, AZ; Coconino County Sheriff’s Deputies and Detectives have been investigating an incident in which a 60 year old female was the victim of an aggravated assault and theft of her automobile while she was traveling from South Carolina to Northern California. On Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at approximately 2:30 pm Sheriff’s Deputies and Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) Officers were dispatched to the Meteor Crater rest stop located off of Interstate 40 on the report of an aggravated assault and theft of motor vehicle. According to the victim she stopped at the Meteor Crater rest stop for the purpose of using the bathroom. As the victim walked to the restroom, she noticed multiple vehicles in the parking lot and saw a number of people walking in the area. As she entered a stall of the restroom, she noticed she was the only person in the ladies room. While seated in the stall she was able to look through the space between the bottom of the door and the floor and observed a person’s shoes as they walked past. As the victim walked out of the stall she glanced behind her and observed that the stall door next to the one she had used was open and a male subject was standing on the toilet. According to the victim, the subject had concealed his hand underneath his shirt and it appeared he was holding a firearm.
According to the victim, the male subject demanded the keys to her vehicle, approached her and punched her in the face, knocking her to the floor of the bathroom. While the victim was down on the floor, the suspect forcibly took her keys, exited the bathroom and drove out of the rest area parking lot in the victim’s vehicle.
Deputies and DPS Officers conducted an extensive search for the suspect and vehicle. Patrol officers were assisted in the search by the DPS helicopter. A nationwide attempt to locate was broadcasted on the victim’s vehicle including a physical description of the suspect. The victim’s vehicle description was entered as stolen into the National Crime Information Center database as stolen.
On Monday, April 14, 2014 at about 2:30 pm Las Vegas Metro Patrol Officers advised the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office that they had the victim’s vehicle and the driver/suspect in custody. The officer explained that the Las Vegas patrol vehicles are equipped with tracking devices that can detect LoJack signals from stolen vehicles that are equipped with the device.The Las Vegas Officer received a signal from the victim’s vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. He identified 32 year-old Renee Cadriel of San Antonio, Texas as the driver. Cadriel was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle.
Las Vegas Metro Detectives are assisting the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office with this case. The victim was shown a photo lineup, which included a picture of the driver the Las Vegas Police arrested, and positively identified the suspect as the one who assaulted her at the rest stop.
The suspect is being held on a warrant issued by the Coconino County Justice Court charging him with Armed Robbery, Theft of Means of Transportation, and Assault with a bond of $100,000. Extradition is pending.
