[ARCHIVED] Man Shot in Hand During Scouting Trip

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - A 23-year-old man from out of state reported that he was shot in the hand by an unknown and unseen person while he was in Northern Arizona scouting for elk.

The Coconino County Sheriff's Office received a call 10:23 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 2 in which the caller reported the shooting. Deputies and emergency medical personnel responded to Interstate 40 at Welch Road where the victim was waiting.

Shortly after deputies arrived, the victim was transported to the Flagstaff Medical Center by Guardian Medical Transport. According to the victim, he came to Flagstaff for the purpose of assisting his brother with an upcoming elk hunt.

The victim told deputies he was on a hill side located off of Welch Road and was using binoculars to search the terrain for elk. The victim suddenly dropped the binoculars and realized his hand was bloodied, disfigured and severely injured.

The victim was unable to provide any information regarding a possible suspect or suspects. Detectives are investigating the possibility that the victim was shot from a distance by another person who was hunting in the area.
