On Monday October 29, 2012 at about 10:50 am the Williams, AZ Police Department received a 911 call of an unresponsive child at a home in the Valle area. The call was relayed to the Sheriff’s Office and Deputies along with Emergency Medical Personnel from Guardian and Life Line were immediately sent to the home. Prior to the arrival of first responders the victim’s biological mother returned home and made a second 911 call to report that her two year-olddaughter was unconscious.
Upon the arrival of medical personnel the child received on scene emergency medical care and was flown to the Flagstaff Medical Center by a Guardian Helicopter.
Deputies learned that Mr. Acevedo was living at the home with the victim and her mother and he was described as the mother’s boy friend. The child’s mother left her daughter in the care of Acevedo while she was at work. During interviews with Acevedo detectives determined that he gave multiple and varying accidental excuses as to why the child was unconscious. None of his explanations were consistent with the victim’s injuries which included severe head trauma. Acevedo was arrested on Monday night for Child Abuse and Aggravated Assault and was transported to the Coconino County Detention Facility where he was incarcerated.
At about 8:10 pm on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 a physician at the Flagstaff Medical Center stated the victim had no brain activity and later pronounced the victim deceased. Jose Zenaido Acevedo was subsequently arrested for Homicide. Coconino County Sheriff’s Detectives and the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office are continuing this investigation.
