Flagstaff, AZ -The Coconino County Detention Facility will re-start allowing individuals convicted and sentenced to serve jail time in Coconino County by self-surrender, beginning Monday, April 5th. The Detention Facility suspended the acceptance of court commitments with the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic, to keep the jail population down and to keep non-violent offenders out of jail, while helping to mitigate the COVID-19 Virus from entering and spreading throughout the facility. Most jails in the state implemented similar suspensions for these reasons.
The acceptance of individuals to serve the obligated court commitment will occur on a scheduled basis with a daily cap on how many self-surrenders can report each day. This will be done to help keep the daily jail population at an acceptable number for the facility to continue the 14-day COVID-19 quarantine of newly incarcerated individuals and provide distancing within the inmate housing units. The schedule will be alphabetical by the first letter of the individual’s last name. Based on last name, individuals will have a seven-day period each month to self-surrender and serve the imposed jail sentence. The Detention Facility will accept up to 5-Court Commits daily. If someone scheduled to self-surrender misses the cut off date, the individual will need to attempt on another scheduled day. This schedule will remain in effect until further notice and can be modified by the Sheriff’s Office as needed. Both the Flagstaff Detention Facility and the Page Temporary Holding Facility will follow the schedule listed below.
Currently, the Detention Facility is offering both the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccinations to the inmate population, along with regular COVID-19 testing. To date, the facility has had 189-inmates and 35-Detention Staff test positive. To date, 94-vaccinations have been given to inmates wanting to receive the vaccine. Currently, 75% of the inmate population has declined to receive the vaccine. The Detention Facility will continue to make the vaccine available to new and non-vaccinated inmates.
The Detention Facility would like to stress that although the state may be moving toward opening and lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, the congregate nature of jails prevent us from moving at the same pace. We will continue to keep all other restrictions and suspensions in place until further notice as consistent with other county jails in the state. These restrictions and suspensions can be located in our multiple media releases, available on the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office website and Facebook page.
The Sheriff’s Office will remain current on COVID-19 best practices and information as it is made available, adjusting procedures as is necessary and appropriate.
