[ARCHIVED] FUSD and other County Schools Going Back to In Person Learning

Coconino County, AZ – The Flagstaff Unified School District (FUSD) and other school districts in Coconino County are beginning to return to In Person Learning.  The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office is committed to keeping our children and all pedestrians as safe as possible.  With the return of in person learning there will be an increase in pedestrian traffic in our neighborhoods, school bus stops with children at them, school busses traveling our neighborhoods and highways, and busy school zones.

The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind drivers to take extra care over the next few weeks to pay special attention while traveling the roadways.  This would include watching for children at bus stops, watching for children walking in the neighborhoods, and watching for and obeying bus stop signals.

Deputies will be taking an extra effort over the next few weeks to conduct back to school enforcement activities with the goal of increasing accountability amongst drivers and increasing the safety for our children.  This will include extra patrols of our neighborhoods during the times in which children are walking to and from bus stops, special enforcement of vehicles illegally passing stopped school busses, and extra patrols of school zones.

Here are some tips for in and around school zones:

NO distractions. Research shows that taking your eyes off the road for two seconds doubles your chances of having an accident.

Stay alert. Don’t rush into and out of driveways. Expect pedestrians on the sidewalk, especially around schools and in neighborhoods.

Watch for bikes. Children on bicycles are often unpredictable.

Brake for buses. Red flashing lights means the bus is loading or unloading.  It is a violation to pass a bus when their red lights are flashing.

Watch for crossing guards. They help students safely cross busy intersections.
