[ARCHIVED] Sheriff's Office conducts overnight rescue off Fat Mans Loop Trail

Sheriff’s Office conducts overnight rescue off Fat Mans Loop Trail

Flagstaff, AZ –

On February 11th, 2021,Coconino County Sheriff’s Deputies and Search and Rescue responded to the Fat Mans Loop Trail near the base of Mount Elden,  in response to a call for help from a single injured hiker that was unable to hike out on his own.

Coconino County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, with the assistance of Flagstaff Fire Department responded to the Fat Mans Loop Trail head Thursday afternoon in response to a call for help from a hiker in the area.  Personnel were able to reach the subject later in the evening.  Due to high winds and adverse weather, it was decided to delay the extrication until the next morning, February 12th. The subject was in an area with adverse terrain that would have required a technical rescue.  Members of the Search and Rescue team along with a Firefighter Paramedic with the Flagstaff Fire Department stayed with the victim overnight until the rescue could be attempted in the daylight.  They were able to treat his injuries until weather conditions improved and daylight arrived.

An opening in weather presented itself on Friday morning and the victim was extricated by a Department of Public Safety Helicopter via a short haul operation.  The subject was transported by ground to the Flagstaff Medical center where he was treated for a Lower Leg injury.  After the victim was removed the winds increased, making removal of the rescuers too hazardous.  The rescuers hiked to the top of Mount Elden and were extricated by tracked vehicles coming in from Mount Elden Lookout Road.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank Guardian Medical Transport, the Flagstaff Fire Department, and the Arizona Department of Public Safety for their assistance in this rescue.
