[ARCHIVED] Update on Rescue Efforts for Men Stranded in Paria Canyon

A Coconino County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team was flown to Page, AZ yesterday in response to the two stranded men in Paria Canyon. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) helicopter out of Phoenix attempted to fly the team into an area of the canyon, but brown out conditions (related to dust and on setting darkness) prevented the helicopter from being able to insert the rescuers into the canyon. The SAR Team was returned to Page where they spent the night. Early this morning the Coconino SAR Team met up with a Kane County team with plans to hike in from a northern point into the canyon. Another Coconino County SAR Team departed from Flagstaff this morning to join the rescue efforts. The SAR Team is coordinating with a DPS helicopter out of Kingman and a National Park Service helicopter crew to attempt to drop radio communication into the stranded men. The plan is to attempt another insertion of rescuers into the canyon closer to the stranded men. The rescuers continue to assess how best to extract the stranded men out of the Paria Canyon.
