[ARCHIVED] UPDATE: Sheriff's Office Investigating Three Vehicle Fatality Crash on Leupp Road

Updated Media Release, October 9, 2019

Flagstaff, AZ – Coconino County Sheriff Office continues to investigate the three-car fatality accident that occurred on October 3rd at milepost 438 on Leupp Road. The accident involved three vehicles and five total occupants. One victim was pronounced deceased at the scene and all other occupants were transported to Flagstaff Medical Center where they were treated for injuries.

The deceased has been identified as Karl J. Hautzenroeder, a 65-year old resident of the Alpine Ranchos community east of Flagstaff. Investigators learned through witness accounts that Hautzenroeder’s vehicle was stopped facing northbound, preparing to make a left-hand turn, when the vehicle was struck from the rear by another vehicle. The impact forced Hautzenroeder’s vehicle into oncoming traffic where it was struck by another vehicle.

Leupp Road was closed in both directions during the investigation and reopened at approximately 9:30 pm that night. Also assisting on scene were Flagstaff Fire Department, Summit Fire Department and Guardian Medical.

The accident is still under investigation and no further information is available at this time.

Flagstaff, AZ – At 3:32 pm Coconino County Sheriff’s Deputies from the Flagstaff District responded to milepost 438 Leupp Rd for a reported three vehicle injury accident.  Deputies are on scene along with medics. One subject was declared deceased on scene, and four individuals have been transported to Flagstaff Medical Center.

Leupp Road is closed in both directions at this time while the incident is being investigated with an unknown time for reopening.  No further information is available at this time.
