[ARCHIVED] Flagstaff Man Dies in Rollover Accident near Winona

On Sunday, March 31, 2013 at about 6:50 a.m. Coconino County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the report of a single vehicle rollover accident on Angell Road, two and half miles east of Townsend Winona Road. Deputies and Summit Fire Department personnel arrived on scene to find a gold Subaru sport utility vehicle rolled over multiple times resulting in significant structural damage. Two occupants of the vehicle were identified at the scene.

The driver, an eighteen year-old male of Flagstaff said he was driving east bound on Angell Road when he saw a nondescript object in front of him. According to the driver he took evasive action by attempting to avoid the obstacle. This resulted in the driver losing control of the vehicle causing it to slide sideways off the north shoulder of Angell Road and into the bar ditch. The vehicle continued to travel eastbound until one of the driver’s side tires lodged in the soft dirt shoulder causing the vehicle to roll over multiple times. Investigators believe the driver was wearing his seat belt causing him to remain in the vehicle. The front seat passenger, who has been identified as sixty six year old Cletus “CG” Haire of Flagstaff, was ejected from the vehicle and came to rest underneath it. The driver climbed out of a broken window and found the victim pinned underneath the vehicle. He pulled the victim from under the damaged vehicle and called 9-1-1 for assistance. The driver was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries and released. Cletus Haire was pronounced deceased at the scene.

This investigation is on-going and Deputies are attempting to determine if speed was a factor in this collision and if the deceased victim was wearing his safety restraint.
