[ARCHIVED] Man Arrested After Fleeing from Sedona Police

Media Release from March 21, 2013. Flagstaff, AZ - Coconino County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 28-year-old Nicholas Wayne Gunter of Prescott Valley for Aggravated DUI, Failure to Yield to an emergency vehicle, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Possession of Stolen Property after he fled from pursuing deputies and Sedona Police officers. Sedona Police officers intend to charge him with Theft, Unlawful Flight from Law Enforcement, and Endangerment all of which are crimes that occurred in their jurisdiction.

On March 21, 2013 at 12:30 am, a Sedona Police officer contacted the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office and said he was pursuing a vehicle northbound on Hwy 89A from Sedona. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle as it was very similar in appearance to the description of a vehicle seen driving away from a theft in the city limits of Sedona. The vehicle failed to stop for the officers who had engaged their emergency lights and sirens. The fleeing vehicle traveled northbound on Hwy 89A into Oak Creek Canyon. The Sedona officer discontinued the pursuit of the vehicle as it left the city limits and entered into Oak Creek Canyon.

The vehicle description and reason for the initial pursuit was given to Coconino County Sheriff’s deputies who positioned themselves along Hwy 89A between Oak Creek Canyon and Flagstaff attempting to locate the vehicle. At 0104 am, deputies observed the vehicle traveling northbound on Hwy 89A at the top of the Oak Creek Canyon switchbacks. Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle and the suspect driver failed to yield. A deputy placed tire deflation devices (stop sticks) in the path of the vehicle at Hwy 89A and Old Munds Highway, south of Flagstaff city limits. The vehicle struck the tire deflation devices deflating three of the four tires. Eventually the vehicle stopped on JW Powell Boulevard and I 17 where the driver left the vehicle and fled on foot towards the interstate. Deputies pursued the driver on foot. Arizona Department of Public Safety officers located the suspect walking along I-17 near JW Powell Boulevard and arrested him without further incident. Flagstaff Police Officers were also present and assisted with this arrest.

Anyone with information regarding this investigation or any other crime may call the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office at 928-774-4523 or Sedona Police Department at 928-282-3100.
