[ARCHIVED] Investigation of Two Vehicle Head on Collision sending Five to Hospital

March 3, 2018 at 5:29 pm - Media Release - Leupp Road, Coconino County, AZ

On March 3rd,  at approximately 8:04 am, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office responded to Leupp Road Mile Post 438 for the report of a 2-vehicle head on collision with multiple injuries.   Coconino County Sheriff's Office, along with Summit Fire Department and Guardian Ground and Air units, responded and treated 5 victims.  One victim was transported by helicopter and four by ambulance to Flagstaff Medical Center.

Coconino County Sheriff Deputies along with other first responder personnel responded to Leupp road mile post 438 for the report of a head on collision involving two vehicles with a total of five occupants.  Upon arrival first responders found a Ford Escort and a Dodge pickup truck were involved and blocking both lanes of traffic.  Personnel from Summit Fire had to extricate one child from the Ford Escort. 

One 5-year-old girl was flown by Guardian Air to Flagstaff Medical Center in critical condition.  Both drivers, a 7-year-old girl, and an 11-month-old boy were transported to Flagstaff Medical Center by Guardian Ambulance.

Witness accounts stated the male driver of the Dodge pickup drifted into the northbound lane in front of the Ford Escort.  The driver of the Ford Escort attempted to avoid collision but was unsuccessful.  The Dodge pickup was occupied by one male driver identified as Justin Johnson of Phoenix, AZ.  The Ford Escort was occupied by four individuals, the driver identified as Natasha Brown and her 3 children (7 and 5 year-old girls along with her 11 month old son) of Flagstaff, AZ.

All subjects were admitted to Flagstaff Medical Center.  Investigation is still on going and lane closures are still in effect on Leupp Road .

At this time Leupp road is reduced to one lane, at Mile Post 438.  Residents and travelers can expect delays and a one lane closure for most of the day. Cause of the accident is under investigation.  More details will follow as they become available.
