[ARCHIVED] One Hiker Deceased, Two Injured After Lightning Strike on Humphreys Peak

Update 7:30 pm on 7/20/16 - One male age 17 is confirmed deceased after being struck by lightning while hiking Humphreys Peak today. Two other males ages 17 and 18 have been transported to Flagstaff Medical Center with injuries that were likely received due to their proximity to the lightning strike. The two injured hikers were conscious and walking when emergency responders reached them. The three hikers are from the Tempe, AZ area. Further updates will not be available until 7/21/16.
At approximately 12:50 pm on 7/20/16, 911 call came into Sheriff's Office Dispatch from hikers near summit of Humphreys Peak reported they had been struck by lightning. At least one hiker was reported to be unresponsive. Due to severe and continuous lightning on the peaks, emergency responders are staged at Agassiz Lodge and coordinating with the hikers to get them to safety. More information will be made available as possible.
