[ARCHIVED] Sheriff's Office Calls for Service Over July 4, 2016 Weekend

Coconino County, AZ – From Friday July 1, 2016 through Monday July 4, 2016, the Coconino County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to approximately 461 citizen initiated calls for service and conducted approximately 498 on-sight assignments (area patrols, traffic stops, etc.). The activity over the weekend resulted in a total of 71 long form reports detailing information on traffic accidents, criminal activity, civil issues and suspicious incidents.

Despite efforts of many agencies to pre-inform people who planned to enjoy recreation activities in Northern Arizona about fire restrictions, approximately 90 calls for service (*in table below these calls may appear under categories of Fire Related, Disturbing the Peace, Suspicious Activity, or Assist Other Agency, depending on how the call came into Dispatch) associated with complaints about violations of fire restrictions and fireworks restrictions. Several warnings were issued for violations.

Also, with numerous people camping in the area, deputies responded to many disturbing the peace calls in which nearby campers had disputes, reports of shots fired as well off-highway vehicle violations of ARS traffic and vehicle regulations. Below is a general summary of the types of calls deputies responded to over the weekend:

SEARCH AND RESCUE (SAR):
• overdue adult male in Dogtown Lake area on 7/2/16; subject located by family shortly after he was reported overdue
• assisted Flagstaff Police Department on 7/3/16 with response to 10-year-old male reported separated from his friends near Mt Elden Trailhead by Summit High School; subject located shortly thereafter at his residence
• responded to separated parties involving two juveniles at Slide Rock State Park on 7/3/16; children found shortly thereafter by State Park Ranger

OFF-HIGHWAY ACTIVITY: Because of the large number of Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) traffic on the forests and near neighborhoods, deputies conducted area patrols with dual purpose of education and enforcement of OHV laws. Several warnings and citations were issued for ATV/OHV violations.

• two-vehicle, non-injury accident near FS914 and FS 240 in the Mormon Lake area on 7/3/16
• two-ATV, injury accident with three patients near FS228 and FS9469 in the Casner Park area on 7/3/16
• single-ATV, injury accident/rollover near FS700 in the Cinder Hills area on 7/3/16
• single-vehicle, non-injury accident near FS328 in the Tusayan area on 7/4/16
• single-vehicle, non-injury accident on FS141 in the Garland Prairie area on 7/4/16
• single-OHV, injury accident/roll-over near FS700 in the Willard Springs area on 7/4/16
• single-OHV, injury accident/roll-over near FS777 at 50 Dollar Hill in the Cinder Hills area on 7/4/16

TRAFFIC RELATED ACTIVITY: Deputies conducted some 98 traffic stops and over 383 area patrols and business checks. Deputies issued several citations for civil traffic violations, driving on suspended license, and reckless driving.

ALCOHOL RELATED ACTIVITY: Deputies issued two DUI citations.

BOAT ACTIVITY: Deputies on Boat Patrol at Lake Powell had a dual approach of education and enforcement with people in water craft on the lake. Several warnings and citations were issued for boating violations.

OTHER RESPONSES & INVESTIGATIONS:
• On 7/2/16 deputies responded to a report of a structure fire in the Baderville area which is believed to have started in an electrical outlet when the home was hit by lightning.
• On 7/3/16, deputies contacted about a dozen protestors at Snowbowl who were trespassing in a construction zone. The protestors disbanded without incident.
• On 7/3/16 deputies responded to a report of a gunshot wound to the arm at FMC in which the patient reported the wound occurred when a bullet ricocheted while he was target practicing
• On 7/4/16 deputies responded a suicidal woman with a pistol on FS22 in the Fredonia area. The responding deputy was able to safely disarm the woman.

BOOKINGS: The Coconino County Detention Facility processed 124 bookings from 7/1/16-7/4/16; 36 of those bookings were at the Page Detention Facility. Because both are regional holding facilities, bookings are from multiple law enforcement agencies throughout Coconino County.
