[ARCHIVED] Citizen Captures and Holds Burglary Suspect Until Deputies Arrive

Flagstaff, AZ - Twenty-two year old Ethan Rory Manning of Flagstaff, Arizona was arrested on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 for one count of First Degree Residential Burglary while armed with a handgun and one count of Felony Theft and one count Probation Violation on an original charge of Residential Burglary.

On Friday, January 11, 2013 a homeowner who lives in the Cosnino area located east of Flagstaff off of Interstate 40 called the Sheriff’s Office to report that an unknown suspect or suspects entered his home while it was unoccupied and took several sports collector items. On Friday, January 18, 2013 the same victim reported a second residential burglary that occurred at the same address. According to the homeowner a firearm was taken during the second burglary.

Following the second burglary, the victim elected to have a home security system installed. One component of the system included imaging devices; one of which was aimed at the previous point of entry, the rear sliding glass door. On Tuesday, January 22, 2013 family members returned to their home in the afternoon to discover that yet another burglary had occurred and the point of entry was the rear sliding glass door. The victim checked the images recorded by the security system and saw very clear images of the suspect as he forcibly entered the home. Recorded images also depicted the suspect as he left the home carrying a laptop computer and a twelve-pack of soft drinks, both belonging to the victim. The images also showed that the suspect was wearing a backpack.

Later that day one of the victim’s coworkers was at his home and viewed the images of the burglary suspect. At this point family members recognized the suspect in the images as Ethan Manning who lives on the same street as the victim. As the victim’s coworker was backing his vehicle out of the driveway of the victim’s residence he saw an individual walking on the street who matched the suspect depicted in the images and stopped the vehicle and asked the subject if he was Ethan to which the subject said yes. The coworker attempted to detain the suspect until the Deputies arrival and Mr. Manning physically resisted. The coworker was able to restrain the suspect until the Deputies arrived. However, Manning received several minor injuries during the scuffle.

Coconino County Sheriff’s Detectives served a search warrant on Ethan Manning’s home and recovered the laptop computer, the twelve-pack of soft drinks and a handgun that were taken during the burglary that occurred on January 22, 2013. Detectives are continuing this investigation and additional charges for burglary at homes in the Cosnino subdivision are possible. The suspect is being held at the Coconino County Detention Facility on a $50,000 bond. Anyone who lives in the Cosnino neighborhood who has been burglarized but has not reported it is urged to call the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office at (928) 774-4523.
