FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Coconino County Public Works Department will host an open house event from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17 to educate the public and children about the County’s roadway system and maintenance equipment.
During the event, which will be held at the County Public Works yard at 5600 E. Commerce Blvd. in Flagstaff (see enclosed map), visitors can also receive information on Proposition 403, the County’s Road Maintenance Sales Tax – a ballot initiative voters will decide in November.
The open house will have many attractions for children, including a variety of road maintenance big-rigs to climb and view up close. Kids can enjoy play and learning stations such as “Build a Road Boulevard,” “Plow Junction” and “Mechanicsville.” The stations are designed to teach children about the importance of county roads, how they’re built and maintained.
Kids can earn their road maintenance certificates, hard hats, receive activity books and have their pictures taken on a backhoe.
Public Works staff will also be present with an array of information about Proposition 403 and how it will impact road maintenance services, including snow plowing, road grading and pothole filling operations around the County. Furthermore, a map will be displayed showing the proposed road projects to be constructed if the ballot measure is approved.
If approved by voters, sales tax revenue from Proposition 403 will only be used to repair and service County-maintained roads.
The open house is the first of several planned to provide information about Proposition 403 and the County’s road maintenance funding issue. The next event is scheduled for Oct. 2 at the County’s Public Works yard.
