Waste Reduction in Coconino County
Recycling
Recycling is a great way to conserve resources, limit energy consumption, and lower carbon greenhouse gas emissions. The energy used to recycle materials is significantly less than it is to manufacture it from raw materials. It is important to dispose of and recycle hazardous products, such as electronics, safely and correctly to avoid further air or water pollution that goes into manufacturing the metals, plastics, and glass.
For instance, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, recycling one million laptops saves the energy equivalent to the electricity used by more than 3,500 US homes in a year. For every one million cell phones we recycle, 35 thousand pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold and 33 pounds of palladium can be recovered.

Composting
Composting food waste diverts excess food from the landfill. There are climate change impacts with food waste: the emissions involved with transporting the food waste to the landfill, and then when food breaks down in the landfill, it releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas. So composting helps with climate change impacts and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. If you have space, you can compost your food waste at home, in your backyard. The alternative is to have your food waste picked up by a compost collection service. Some folks even have worm composting bins.

Thrift Stores
Fast fashion produces a lot of waste. Instead of buying new clothes, consider buying used. The same goes for other household goods. Additionally, by shopping at a second hand or thrift store, you are keeping money in the local economy because many thrift stores donate their proceeds to local charities and non-profits.
