What’s New...
December 17, 2021:
Public Works is continuing to work with its consulting engineers and the Pilot Travel Center to identify and mitigate the causes of isolated traffic issues for the roundabout and surrounding roads. To date, several tasks to address traffic issues have been completed while others will soon be underway. Last week’s work included the following:
- Object markers to hinder illegal left turns on County right-of-way at the Pilot fuel island truck exit have been installed. Permanent “Exit Only” signs will be installed at this location as soon as they are received. Other work completed to date includes the following:
- Two additional “No Left Turn” signs and two “Do Not Enter” signs at the Pilot passenger vehicle entrance have been installed.
Installation of delineators along Hughes Avenue to reinforce lane separation have been completed. Installation of the “Right Movement Only” sign on Hughes and an additional “Do Not Enter” sign near the back of the Pilot Travel Center parking lot has been completed.
Directional chevrons and an instructional sign have been installed on the roadway.
Damaged concrete roundabout curbing was replaced, and a new inner concrete ring was installed to reduce damage being caused to the landscaping by truck and trailer operators.
An additional truck apron has been installed to help mitigate the repeated damage to the curb and gabions of the center island.
The County will continue work to identify and mitigate the causes of isolated traffic issues for the new roundabout and surrounding roads. For more information, please visit www.coconino.az.gov/BellemontAccessSafetyProject.

Public Works’ contractor has installed five corrugated metal pipe (CMP) culverts under Shadow Mountain Drive. This project, which was a prerequisite for Phase B of the upcoming Bellemont Access & Safety Improvements Project, was conducted this fall to provide a head start for Phase B of the Bellemont Access & Safety Improvements Project next spring.
Earlier this year bedrock was encountered in the area near Shadow Mountain Drive by utility companies doing relocation work. Removal of the bedrock delayed completion of this utility relocation work, the result of which was a major factor in the decision to move the start date for Phase B from summer 2020 to spring 2021. Installing culverts this fall has helped to ensure that Phase B starts on time next spring as soon weather permits.
Phase A
Phase A of the project included a four-foot shoulder widening of Shadow Mountain Drive to install multimodal lanes between Alpine Road and Pegasus Drive.
