Interning with the County Attorney's Office
The Coconino County Attorney’s Office provides an internship program for junior and senior college students in a wide variety of majors from Northern Arizona University (NAU) and Coconino Community College (CCC). We offer exposure to governmental law practice, criminal and civil case management, and trial preparation, giving students the opportunity to integrate their classroom knowledge with hands-on work experience.County Attorney Roles
The County attorney is the chief prosecutor for the County and represents the County in all legal matters. The Criminal Division prosecutes all felonies and juvenile offenses occurring in the County and all misdemeanor cases occurring in the unincorporated areas of the County. The Civil Division is responsible for providing civil legal advice to all County departments, including the Board of Supervisors, Planning and Zoning Commission, all elected and appointed officials, school districts, fire districts, improvement and other special districts. This division also prosecutes and defends all civil litigation involving the County and its officers.Variety of Opportunities
A variety of internship experiences and projects can be designed for differing majors. Assisting prosecutors and staff in all phases of criminal cases, assisting crime victims and witnesses, observing trials and legal proceedings usually are of interest to:- Applied Anthropology or Psychology
- Pre-Law
- Public Administration
- Social Science majors in Criminal Justice
- Social Work
- Sociology
Assisting and observing civil attorneys and staff in government matters,
including litigation, public meetings, adoptions, mental health
commitments, guardianships, tax appeals, special districts, land use,
water and environmental issues, employment and human resources, and
property concerns are usually of interest to majors in:
- Applied Anthropology
- Environmental Studies
- General Liberal Studies
- Political Science
- Pre-Law
- Psychology
- Public Administration
- Public Health
- Social Work
- Sociology
Additional Areas of Interest
Internship projects utilizing the skills of Communication, Computer Science, Business, Social Science, and other majors have included web design for our departmental webpage, compiling case management statistics, and assisting in designing community outreach presentations regarding recruitment, drug use prevention, identity theft, deferred prosecution, and other programs.A Friendly Office Nestled in a Great Location
