2022 and 2024 Candidate/Campaign Finance Filings
Statutory changes have gone into effect that have caused the campaign finance forms to be revised. Please review any documents in their entirety before formally submitting to the Coconino County Elections Department. It is recommended that each committee review the updated campaign finance law in the Arizona Revised Statutes, Title 16, Chapter 6 (A.R.S. §§ 16-901--16-938).
What do I need to know about campaign finance?
I do not intend to spend more than $1,400 during the campaign
- Campaign finance reporting is required if a candidate raises or spends, in any combination, more than $1,400.
- For example, if you raised $700 (or used $700 of your own monies) for your campaign and spent that $700 on yard signs, your fundraising and spending totals $1,400.
- A Statement of Organization must be filed within 10 days of surpassing $1,400, and you are required to report all contributions and expenses leading up to the $1,400 threshold.
I expect to spend more than $1,400
- A Statement of Organization must be filed upon reaching the $1,400 threshold. Filing a Statement of Organization does trigger the requirement to file campaign finance reports during each reporting period.
- However, you may file it before qualifying as a committee.
I still have an open committee from a previous candidacy
- A candidate may have only one candidate committee in existence for the same office during the same election cycle [A.R.S. § 16-906(F)]. If you have a candidate committee from a previous election for the same office, you can continue to use that committee for the current election.
I don't know what to name my committee
- A candidate committee must include the candidate's name and office sought [A.R.S. § 16-906(B)(1)(a)].
I have had changes in my committee
- You, or your committee, have 10 days to file an amended Statement of Organization.
How do I terminate my campaign committee
- Filing a Termination Statement will close an active political committee. It must be filed with a campaign finance report showing a balance of zero. Prior to filing, any outstanding campaign finance reports must be filed, and any applicable late fees must be paid.
Campaign Committee formation and finance reporting can be extremely complex and challenging. Please read and follow the Arizona Secretary of State’s handbook and applicable Arizona election statutes. Do not rely upon only this website or any oral instructions given by this office. If the instructions and statutes are confusing, we recommend you seek counsel.
