Parks and Recreation
MISSION: To provide recreational opportunities by developing and managing regional parks, trails, and natural areas.
VISION: The Coconino County Parks and Recreation Department will improve the quality of life for all by partnering with others to offer a variety of recreational experiences, provide quality facilities and services, protect natural and historic areas, and develop educational opportunities throughout the county for a diverse and growing population.
We accomplish our mission and maintain our vision by operating five county parks in beautiful northern Arizona, producing the annual Coconino County Horse Races and Coconino County Fair events, and implementing the November, 2002 voter-approved capital improvements sales tax initiative, the Coconino Parks and Open Space Program.
MASTER PLAN PROCESS
Preliminary Findings for Coconino County Parks & Recreation Master Plan
On December 11, PROS Consulting presented to the Board of Supervisors preliminary findings on Coconino County Parks & Recreation master plan process. The consultant reported initial information on facilities and program inventory and analysis. Key findings from a series of public meetings involving stakeholders and members of six communities around the county were also shared.

Planning and Acquisition Manager, Jan Bush said, “we also thank the participants of the public meetings recently held in Page, Tuba, Williams, Sedona, Fredonia and Flagstaff as well as citizens who sent their comments electronically. We want to engage County residents in the master plan process on the future of our county parks and recreation system.”
In January , PROS Consulting will conduct a household survey with the assistance of Northern Arizona University’s Social Research Laboratory. This final part of community input stage will involve a random telephone survey with approximately 600 adult residents of Coconino County. They will be asked about their knowledge of County parks and recreation areas, levels of satisfaction with park and recreation services, needs and priorities for future services, and opinion about financial support.
The County engaged PROS Consulting LLC of Dallas TX, an experienced parks and recreation consulting company, to develop the master plan by integrating information about the needs, values and priorities of the growing and diverse communities within the county for parks and recreation. The consultant will also be performing an in-depth investigation of the Department’s physical system (parks, programs trails, and natural areas) and its financial and organizational capacity.
